Shootboxing 2011 Act 4: Rena Kubota vs. Jessica Penne Completes Fight Card

via shootboxing.org

The Shootboxing 2011 Act 4 card has added another fight, as promotional star Rena Kubota will meet Jessica Penne in the event's lone female bout. Shootboxing 2011 Act 4 is scheduled for September 10th, and will be headlined by a bout between mixed martial artist Toby Imada and Muay Thai striker Bovy Sor. Udomson.

Rena Kubota defeated Zaza Sor. Aree on August 19th to bounce back from two consecutive underwhelming performances. The two-time Girls S-Cup champion was surprisingly dominated by Erika Kamimura in an exhibition bout this April, and lost a title bout to Ai Takahashi in June. It would seem that the Shootboxing organization really is looking to rebuild Rena's credibility, as she's one of the major draws under their banner.

Jessica Penne is an American mixed martial artist who will be making her Shootboxing debut. Penne is 8-1 in mixed martial arts, going 1-1 in competition for Bellator. The last time that most fans saw Penne, the 28-year-old Californian dropped a decision Zoila Gurgel at Bellator 25.

With the addition of the bout between Rena and Penne, the full fight card is as follows:

Toby Imada vs. Bovy Sor. Udomson

Shigeki Osawa vs. Yusuke Sugawara

Satoru Suzuki vs. Kenji Kanai (Shootboxing Japan super welterweight title fight)

Akito Sakimura vs. Naguranchun Masa M16 (Shootboxing Japan featherweight title fight)

Rena Kubota vs. Jessica Penne

Shigeki Osawa Set For Shootboxing 2011 Act 4, September 10th

Shigeki Osawa will take on Yusuke Sugawara at Shootboxing 2011 Act 4 on September 10th.

Shootboxing has announced that Shigeki Osawa will be competing at their Shootboxing 2011 Act 4 event on September 10th. Osawa will meet well-regarded Japanese kick boxer Yusuke Sugawara on the evening.

Shigeki Osawa, a Sengoku veteran with strong grappling credentials, performed well in a loss against Hiroaki Suzuki at Shootboxing 2011 Act 1 in February. His opponent, Yusuke Sugawara, challenged for the RISE super lightweight title at RISE 74 in February, drawing with champion Koji Yoshimoto.

The September 10th event was recently announced as being headlined by a bout between mixed martial artist Toby Imada and Muay Thai striker Bovy Sor. Udomson. The headlining bout is an intriguing one, especially given Imada's success in the Shootboxing arena and Bovy's real need for a win.

Two title bouts are also scheduled for the evening, as former professional boxer Satoru Suzuki will meet Kenji Kanai for the Shootboxing Japan super welterweight title and Akito Sakimura will take on Naguranchun Masa M16 for the Shootboxing Japan featherweight title.

RENA has also been announced as a participant for the event. While she's scheduled to compete on the card, her opponent is yet to be named.

Toby Imada In Against Bovy Sor. Udomson at Shootboxing 2011 Act 4

Shootboxing 2011 Act 4 is set to include a bout between mixed martial artist Toby Imada and Muay Thai veteran Bovy Sor. Udomson.

Mixed martial artist Toby Imada is scheduled to face Thai veteran Bovy Sor. Udomson in the first confirmed bout for Shootboxing 2011 Act 4, scheduled for September 10th.

While most combat sports fans most recent memory of Toby Imada is his knockout loss to Patricky Freire in the semifinal round of Bellator's Season 4 Lightweight Tournament, the California native has found some real success while fighting under Shootboxing rules.

Since stepping in for as a late replacement for Charles Bennett at Shootboxing's S-Cup 2010 last November, Imada has gone 3-1 in Shootboxing events. The mixed martial artist was able to upset former K-1 MAX champion Andy Souwer en route to the S-Cup final, before being stopped by Buakaw Por. Pramuk. Imada returned to Shootboxing in June, securing a decision victory over promotional staple and multiple-time champion Hiroki Shishido.

In Bovy Sor. Udomson, Toby Imada will be facing a veteran opponent who has recently fallen on hard times inside the ring. Since losing to Andy Souwer in the S-Cup 2010 quarterfinal, Bovy lost a WPMF title match against Antuan Siangboxing, dropped the rematch of his classic bout with Hiroki Shishido, and fallen to Hichem Chaibi. Bovy was supposed to compete against Iranian fighter Vahid Roshani at the Thailand Versus Challenger 2011 Series opener in July, but withdrew because of injury.

Look for more Shootboxing news in the near future, as organizers have indicated other bouts are soon to be released.

Shootboxing Girls S-Cup 2011 This Weekend, Rena Meets Zaza in Super Fight

via shootboxing.org

This year's edition of the Shootboxing Girls S-Cup is set to kick off this Friday, August 19th, with the 2011 Japan Tournament. The event will feature the rising Erika Kamimura and Seo Hee Ham in tournament action, as well as a non-tournament bout between Rena Kubota and Zaza Sor. Aree.

The Girls S-Cup was given a bit of a boost when Erika Kamimura entered the field, following an injury to Ai Takahashi which cancelled their planned non-tournament bout for Friday's event. Shortly after the cancellation of that bout, it was learned that Kamimura, who dominated an exhibition bout against two-time Girls S-Cup winner Rena Kubota back in April, would be entering the tournament field.

The quarterfinal round of Friday's tournament will see Kamimura meet Kanako Oka. After her surprising success against Rena in April, Kamimura appeared against Titiana van Polanen at RISE 80 in July. She again found success, putting her opponent away inside of one round. As for Kanako Oka, she topped Mizuki Inoue in a shootboxing bout back in May of last year.

Other quarterfinal bouts will pit MMA standout 'Windy' Tomomi Sunaba against Miyo Yoshida, former Girls S-Cup runner-up 'V.V' Mei Yamaguchi against Mina, and solid striker Seo Hee Ham against Emi Fujino.

As mentioned, Rena Kubota and Zaza Sor. Aree will be meeting in a rather intriguing non-tournament bout. Rena could really use a win here, having been handled by Erika Kamimura in April and taken a subsequent decision loss against rival Ai Takahashi. Zaza also lost to Takahashi earlier this year, as she was stopped in the second round of their bout at Shootboxing 2011 Act 1.

Toby Imada and Henri van Opstal Victorious, Rena Falls at Shootboxing 2011 Act 3

via sports.c.yimg.jp

Toby Imada entered Sunday's Shootboxing 2011 Act 3 event having not competed in Shootboxing since his surprising S-Cup run last year and looking to bounce back from a brutal knockout loss to Patricky Freire in early April. Imada was able to find victory against Shootboxing staple Hiroki Shishido, using his judo to negate the superior striking of Shishido and work toward a decision victory.

Imada's win on Sunday would seem to affirm that the mixed martial artist has a solid future in Shootboxing should he choose to pursue it. Imada now stands at 3-1 under the Shootboxing banner, all three of his previous bouts coming at S-Cup 2010, where he was a late replacement for fellow mixed martial artist Charles Bennett.

Henri van Opstal was also able to find victory on the evening, stopping former professional boxing titleholder Satoru Suzuki in the second round of their bout. Van Opstal has posted mixed results throughout his kickboxing career but has done well enough for himself under the Shootboxing banner. As for Suzuki, the loss is a sure setback given the strong beginning to 2011 that he had. knocking out both Kuniyoshi Hironaka and Masahiro Shimada.

The biggest surprise of the event came as two-time Girls S-Cup champion Rena was defeated by Ai Takahashi in a female title bout. The bout was a rematch of the Girls S-Cup 2010 final, which saw Rena take an extension round decision over Takahashi. Rena reportedly looked extremely fatigued in the later stages of the bout, as Takahashi was able to control her effectively and even force a standing eight count at one point. Given the push that Rena received from Shootboxing, it's difficult to say where she - or the women's division - will go from this point forward.

Expect videos of all the action when they become available and check out full event results after the jump, courtesy of one Dan Herbertson.

Toby Imada vs. Hiroki Shishido to Headline Shootboxing 2011 Act 3, June 5th

via www.shootboxing.org

Mixed martial artist Toby Imada will make his return to Shootboxing on June 5th in a bout against promotional standout Hiroki Shishido.

The bout will be Toby Imada's first under the Shootboxing banner since his unlikely run at S-Cup 2010 last November. Imada was able to defeat former K-1 MAX champion Andy Souwer by split decision in the semifinal round of last year's tournament, effectively stealing the show before being stopped by Buakaw Por. Pramuk in the tournament final.

Hiroki Shishido also competed at S-Cup 2010, although his time in the tournament was much more abbreviated. The Japanese fighter was unfortunate to draw Buakaw in the quarterfinal round, though he improved on his last effort against the Thai standout, lasting three rounds before dropping a unanimous decision. Shishido also competed at Shootboxing 2011 Act 1 in February, where he was able to avenge a 2009 loss to Bovy Sor. Udomson.

Rena Kubota and Ai Takahashi are also scheduled to square off on the evening, in what will be a rematch of the Girls S-Cup 2010 final. While Rena is still regarded as Shootboxing's top female competitor, the S-Cup winner was floored by Erika Kamimura in a short exhibition at Shootboxing 2011 Act 2 in April. For her part, Ai Takahashi has gone 2-0 under the Shootboxing banner this year, securing both wins by way of knockout.

It appears that Satoru Suzuki will also be on the card, although no opponent has been confirmed for the former boxing titlist thus far.

Toby Imada Returning to Shoot Boxing in June

Nightmare of Battle is reporting that Toby Imada, perennial contender in the Bellator lightweight tournament, is going to return to Japan again this year to compete in the Shoot Boxing S-Cup.  Imada was a finalist in last year's S-Cup, amazing everyone with a semi final victory over Andy Souwer, only to be defeated in the final by the legend Buakaw Por. Pramuk

Imada's opponent for the June 5th bout will be Hiroki Shishido.  Shishido has held several Shoot Boxing titles and I'm sure is a heavy favorite to win.  But then, so was Souwer.

Shoot Boxing's rule set is much like MMA, except that there is no ground game.  Punches, kicks, throws, and standing submissions are allowed.  Imada's decision victory over Andy Souwer has been attributed largely to very effective throws.   The S-Cup is a tournament style event, so by the time he got to the final and faced Buakaw, he had already been through 2 3-round fights that same night.

Shootboxing 2011 Act 2 Results: Andy Souwer Bests Yoshihiro Sato, Hiroaki Suzuki Wins

via shootboxing.org

Former K-1 MAX champion Andy Souwer continued to build momentum with a victory over Yoshihiro Sato in the main event at Shootboxing 2011 Act 2 on Saturday in Tokyo. Souwer won the bout via unanimous decison, with reported scorecards of 30-29, 30-29, and 30-28.

The victory puts Souwer one step further away from the questions surrounding him following upset losses to Toby Imada last November and Abraham Roqueni in February. Souwer looked to return to form against L'houcine Ouzgni at the It's Showtime Sporthallen Zuid event in early March, outclassing his Moroccan opponent en route to a clear decision victory.

As for Yoshihiro Sato, the Japanese standout is now 1-2 since losing to Giorgio Petrosyan in the final round of the K-1 World MAX 2010 Final. Sato's first bout of 2011 came in early January under the Krush banner, as he defeated Shemsi Beqiri via split decision in a bout that many fans have argued might have gone the wrong way. Armen Petrosyan followed for Sato, as the two met at the Fight Code: Oktagon 2011 event in Milan on March 12th. Petrosyan won via unanimous decision in one of the uglier bouts that you'll find around.

Shootboxing 2011 Act 2 also saw Hiroaki Suzuki return to action, the top Japanese fighter having last defeated Sengoku veteran Shigeki Osawa in an excellent bout at Shootboxing's first major event of the year in February. It seems things may have been more clear cut for Suzuki this time, as he defeated Korean Muay Thai specialist Wu Hu Kim by unanimous decision on three cards of 30-27.

Former Japanese boxing champion Satoru Suzuki scored another knockout victory against Masahiro Shimada. Suzuki put on perhaps the most memorable performance of Shootboxing 2011 Act 1 in February, as he quickly dispatched Kuniyoshi Hironaka when the Cage Force champion foolishly attempted to trade shots with him.

The event hosted both of Shootboxing's top female fighters, as RENA and Ai Takahashi competed in separate bouts. RENA was left to compete in an exhibition bout against young J-Girls veteran Erika Kamimura after her original opponent, Sun Young Kim, pulled out of the their scheduled bout. Kamimura is reported to have surprisingly outclassed RENA in the short exhibition, actually knocking the female face of Shootboxing down with a hook. Meanwhile, Ai Takahashi secured victory with a first round knockout in her bout.

Fights videos will be up when available.
