UFC 143: Dana White Confirms Carlos Condit Vs. Nick Diaz Rematch

via cdn3.sbnation.com

In the wake of UFC 143, the primary focus of discussion throughout the MMA community has been the legitimacy of Carlos Condit's win over Nick Diaz. Throughout the fight, Condit frustrated Diaz as he constantly circled away and forced Nick to chase him. After the fifth round, the judges awarded Condit the unanimous decision. Aside from fight fans arguing the merits of Condit's technical performance, the story this week has been whether or not there will be a rematch between the two.

After the fight, Dana White himself came out in support of a rematch, saying:

You know, people are bitching and thinking it was close or whatever, we can do that fight again before GSP comes back.

Nick Diaz's camp seems to be in support of this, as Diaz's manager Cesar Gracie himself came out blasting the NSAC judges for their scoring Saturday night. Gracie went as far as to say that the judges had and have had a bias against Diaz personally for his style and in-fight antics. He did not specifically call for the rematch, but playing up the drama to this extent definitely shows that Gracie doesn't want to let the issue pass.

In pretty much direct response, Condit's manager, Malki Kawa released a statement today:

"At this point, [a rematch] is not something we're looking to do," he said. "We're looking for Georges. People forget, Carlos waited a long time to get this fight.

In a surprise turn of events, it seems Dana White found the right price tag to change the mind of Condit and his management team. Via his twitter, White responded to a fan asking if rumors of the rematch were true. Dana responded:

I think Condit takes the rematch in dominant fashion ala Frankie Edgar in his rematch with BJ Penn. Nick just has too many mistakes to correct in my mind and not enough time to correct them.

I think so too. I still need to rewatch the fight, but it seems like he really got Nick’s time down later in the fight. And I don’t see Nick adjusting his style enough to counter Condit’s movement in a rematch. My hope tho, is that it turn into a Couture/Liddell type trilogy.

interesting that you bring up Liddell and Randy

because even Randy said that Chuck only needed to make a couple slight adjustments after the first fight. Nick is going to have to learn how to fight laterally instead of just backing his opponent into the fence. He may choose to get this fight to the ground though because that was the most success he had in the entire fight.

Yeah, that was my favorite discovery doing the "Looking At A Legend" post on Liddell

Randy pressured him through basic footwork in the first fight and Liddell turned that around in the second but circling with a lot more urgency. In the 3rd, Randy made some adjustments himself and that was definitely the best fight of the trilogy.

Agreed.

I think we saw that Diaz’s wrestling is just a tad worse than Carlos’, plus Carlos really started to get Diaz’s footwork and timing down later in the fight. I expect Carlos to finish this time around.

Finishing Diaz would be a serious accomplishment without a doubt, but seems unlikely considering his notorious ability to take punishment. But I agree with the idea that it could be a lot like Penn/Edgar II, where Diaz fails to adjust his style while Condit grows increasingly confident in his ability to counter Nick’s style.

If he employs the same strategy, I don’t think he can finish. But I agree he will win and probably a bit more clear-cut.

In response to both you and Annie:

I think Carlos should allow Diaz to come in a little and then grab a collar tie and then wail on Diaz with elbows and open him up; his skin is basically paper. I just think that if he, without knowing Diaz’s exact timing and footwork in a live fight setting, can counter that cleanly and land flush head kicks and spinning back fists, and partial flying knees and spinning back elbows, he can absolutely time him better and land more and harder.

Yeah, Carlos didn’t really get into a rhythm until the third. All the leg kicks may have helped to slow Nick down, but part of Carlos’ discomfort may have been caused by the fact that there wasn’t a recent blueprint to crack the Diaz style. I think he started to believe in his gameplan and rhythm as the fight progressed and his tactics were actually working. I think he gets more and more dangerous to Nick in the second fight and he settles into the fact that Diaz is not going to be able to overwhelm him as he had so many previous opponents.

so many emotions this week

I am overflowing with both dread and excitement. I wonder how soon it will be, since neither guy took any real damage.

Hard to say

But they’re going to want to set it so the winner can still face GSP as sson as he returns. I would think July would be the latest for a probably turnaround by end of the year.

Seems likely for the Fox card, no?

Nick is smart enough to enact a different strategy on the feet. I think he obviously thought he was winning.

He’ll probably take it to the ground though. Remember, he did take the back after 23 odd minutes of fighting and I don’t think he sought to bring it to the ground with much urgency until the fifth.

My hope is they have a five round ground battle, with Nick taking a decision.

Then we could have a very necessary trilogy

Problem is it'll be unlikely.

The UFC made it pretty damned clear who they wanted it to win in their marketing campaigns.

Pfft. Are we going to rematch every decision people bitch about now? What’s that? Only if Dana White can make a bunch of money off it? Ok then.

AWSOME!!!!!

Best thing I could hear today. I don’t think it could be any better than this.

If you read comments from Diaz’s corner you would hear Nick who wanted to take a risk and go for the finish, but his team advised him to stay calm, due to winning the fight.

I thought the fight was a draw, yet if the rematch goes the same way and Carlos will win in the same fashion I won’t complain, at least this time Nick know what can happen if he don’t go for the kill
