Nick Diaz Gets Beat By Carlos Condit, Retires at UFC 143

sbnation.com

I'm not going to accept the fact that this was a loss. I've lost fights before, where, uh, ya know, like, I'm not going to accept that either. That ain't right. I pushed him back the whole fight. I walked him down. I got the take down. I'm the guy who went out on top. Had I thought I wasn't ahead, I'd have chinned in and finished that arm lock. Hey Carlos is a great guy, I'm happy for him and his family. I think I'm done with this MMA. It's been great out here. I've had a good career.........But I don't think I'm going to get enough to keep going in this. It's been a good time. You know Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Good job Carlos, you're the man, bro.

Well, well, well.....No, I'm not going to gloat or even say "I told you so". The hissy fit that Nick Diaz threw in the cage after he was defeated by Carlos Condit was downright embarrassing for himself, Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu, the UFC and Mixed Martial Arts. It was petulant. It was bratty. It was a complete justification of every single thing that every single critic has ever said about him.

Carlos Condit followed an absolutely masterful gameplan to perfection. He did not get sucked in to a Nick Diaz fight. He made Nick Diaz fight his fight. Nick Diaz wanted to do what he does which is back his opponent into the cage and swarm them with punches. Condit exited perfectly every time Nick tried to back into the cage and he exited with strikes. It was an incredibly risky strategy given how much weight is put on the person who is moving forward in judging. Carlos outlanded Nick and that is something that cannot be disputed and the kicks are what sealed the deal for him. If you scored this fight for Nick Diaz, you probably also scored Chuck Liddell vs. Keith Jardine for "The Iceman". Plodding forward does not and should not win you a mixed martial arts fight.

Star-divide

As for the tantrum.....

If you want to complain about your pay, complain about the media, complain about the work you are required to do in your chosen vocation as a professional fighter then the least you can do is act like a professional fighter. You could have said you disagreed with the decision and vowed to come back stronger. You could have been a man but you acted like a child. I know this retirement will not stick. You will be back and we all know you will be back. Carlos Condit was not stupid enough to stand in front of you and eat bombs until the referee peels you off of them. You need to learn how to adjust on the fly. How many times did you think you could fight the same exact fight until someone caught on? You claimed to be the most well rounded fighter in MMA. That is a lie. A well rounded fighter can shift gears and tweak a gameplan. A well rounded fighter can adapt. You did none of that. You lost and you deserved to lose.

I know you will be back, Nick. I want you to come back. You are a very exciting performer. I just hope you can return as a man. Good luck to you, Nick Diaz.

Did they count all of Condit’s leg kicks in that total? You have to admit that some of those leg kicks were merely taps.

I find it absolutely hilarious that there are people out there who think that if you don't stand in the pocket and bang all night, it's not a fight.

WTF did people expect of Condit?!? For him to just stand there and play into Diaz’s game plan? Diaz played into Condit’s game plan. Condit played Diaz like a fiddle.

Carlos should have just stood there and let Diaz wail on him!

Just stand in front of him and get blasted!

Fight metric had rounds 1 and 3 as close, and by no means was it a landslide.

So it’s a bit condescending to say anyone who scored it for Diaz is dumb. As far as Nick Diaz retiring goes, I understand. This was the biggest fight of his career and he felt like he got robbed. Of course he’d be pissy and upset in the interview, literally, seconds after the decision was announced. It was the heat of the moment, and he was respectful towards Condit. Diaz didn’t do anything wrong as far as his post-fight interview goes.

The biggest issue for me

is the attitude that Condit Kalib Starne’d to a win. That’s what’s most of the fanboy arguments are.

The Starnes defense is absolute bullshit.

I would love to hear an argument from the “Diaz Won Crowd” other than The Starnes Defense or STANDANDBANG!

I think he landed better shots in rounds 1 and 2 and gave him round 5 for the grappling.

It was quantity versus quality for me and the first two rounds.

it is hard me me to give him the 5th for one minute of success on the ground vs. 4 minutes of losing on the feet

I thought it was clearly Condit's game standing in Rd 5

But with so much dissension, I think I should rewatch that part at least.

I think there is no reason whatsoever to act that way.

Spoiled kids in Toys R Us act that way.

All of Nick’s supposed praise was completely backhanded and cancelled out by the complaining. You can’t do both in the same breath.

Personal scoring aside, he felt like he was wronged,

and I understand his reaction completely, especially in the heat of the moment. If I felt like I won, but lost because of the way three judges scored the game, I wouldn’t really feel like playing either.

I understand completely being disappointed with the loss. I absolutely get that.

But it is not as though he is completely foreign to the rules of MMA. There is no way he should have thought he had that fight in the bag. He said he would have sunk that choke in hard if he didn’t think he was winning. That is bad fight IQ. Regardless of how he felt he was on the cards, go for the finish and go for it hard

I absolutely agree, that his "I would've went for the sub" thing was ridiculous,

but I’m not going to bash the guy for being upset about a loss, even if his manner of expressing it could be interpreted as “sour grapes.”

After 3rd round I new Diaz is going to lose

I understand why Nick want to retire. I also understand, why there are two groups of MMA funs. People talk PRIDE days, are over, and I can see that watching Diaz-Condit fight.

I hate watching GSP’s fights because he brings to the cage everything I hate. I can tell you one thing. THERE IS NO WAY Condit can win with GSP.

If you vote for Hendo-Rua as a Fight of the Year then you know why Diaz-Condit will never get that kind of respect

Earl that's for you

Carlos, if Georges comes back in November, are you gonna take other fight between.
answer: No. (from Ariel Helwani interview)

Carlos, why you think you deserved to win the fight
answer: because I punched him in the face and I was able to take him out of his game.

Well I thought you win a fight when you’re better than your opponent

He was better than his opponent.

Oki Earl, I will put it this way

“I am actually not very surprised that Nick, for all his bravado and tough guy attitude would turn down a fight. He did it with Mayhem Miller. I understand that GSP is the big money fight and not wanting to jeopardize that. It really is a double edged sword because if he loses the interim title defense, the fight with GSP doesn’t happen and a huge opportuinity and a ton of money is lost, again.

If my time here at HKL has taught me anything, it is that Nick Diaz doesn’t give a damn about anything other than fighting. He is real, he is tough and all he wants to do is fight and beat people up. So with that in mind, if you are so confident in your skills and toughness, step up to the plate and defend your belt. In other words….

Don’t be scared, homie."
“I just think that creating an interim belt while GSP is out for a year and then icing the interim belt for 7-9 months is a moronic idea. Why even bother?”

Dana will make an announcement in the near future. It will be one of the following:

  • GSP’s rehab is going more slowly than expected. Nick and Carlos will rematch in June or July.
  • Nick will get the winner of the GSP – Condit fight.

Well, either that or Bobby Lashley vs. Roy Nelson has been signed. Crystal ball is cloudy today….probably should break out the Magic 8-Ball.

Nick needs to win at least 2 more fights before getting a title shot.

Hopefully you are right about Lashley vs. Roy though. That would be hilarious

Maybe the rematch isn't so farfetched....although it's not a true "title" shot....

I hadn’t even seen this quote from Dana when I posted that one thing about a rematch:

It’s crazy, but. I was thinking it after the fight. You know, people are bitching and thinking it was close or whatever, we can do that fight again before GSP comes back. It depends on Carlos too, he’s really gotta say, and Nick’s gotta say I want to fight him again too."

Apparently, Georges was mad and told Lorenzo to schedule a Condit/Diaz rematch and Lorenzo told him "I can't do that"

They need to put on another high paced exciting fight for the WW belt before Georges gets back.

I absolutely agree and its a well written article

i think all the fans of Nick which claim it wasnt a legit win base their opinion on Nicks personality and not his actual fighting style. I think all the hyping went into Nicks head too. I m just sorry because his trainer seems the most biased and he seems to be the one firing him to behave this way and this is really not good. I think its bad if Condit accepts a re fight because it would mean that he is even not sure whether his win was legit or not. Would Diaz make a rematch with Condit if he wins this fight under the same conditions? I hightly doubt so. It was a great strategy of Condit and i m happy that he won because he was played so many times to fight this or that than this.. it wasnt a nice thing to do with him and also wasnt nice to make his name so much lower than Diaz in the eyes of many.
