Title Writing: Ranking the Fight Camps 7
Ranking the Fight Camps combines the USA Today/SB Nation consensus rankings with win/loss records over the past three months in order to provide a ranked list of the most successful MMA fight camps in the world.
I was going to change Ranking the fight camps to a monthly feature but I had some free time this afternoon and since it is Tuesday I thought I'd throw up another installment. I made one addition to the scoring system, which I've bolded down below.
Each camp is designated as tier I, II or III, based on how many fighters from the camp appear in the top 25 for all 7 weight classes. Tier I camps have more than five top 25 fighters. Tier II camps have at least two and no more than five top 25ers and Tier III camps are those with just a single fighter in the top 25. A number one ranked fighter is worth 25 points to his camp, a number two ranked fighter is worth 24 and so on. In the past I totaled the score for each camp but moving forward I've decided to average out the score so that the big camps don't all end up at the top.
Over the past three months, each stoppage victory is worth +2, each decision victory +1. Each stoppage loss is worth -2, each decision loss -1. There will also be bonus points awarded in the case of a ranked fighter defeating one with a higher rank. The bonus points will be equal to the difference in rank, up to a maximum of 5 points. For example, when #13 Nathan Diaz defeated #8 Donald Cerrone, he earned 6 points. 1 for the decision victory and 5 because Cowboy was ranked 5 spots higher than he was. This is a new addition to the scoring system.
I'm going to rank the top 5 for each tier, as well as an overall top 15. Only Tier I and II camps will be eligible for the top 15 due to the fact that I am averaging out the consensus scores.
The rankings can be found after the jump.

| Xtreme Couture (I) | 28.87 |
| Cesar Gracie (II) | 28.75 |
| Nova Uniao (I) | 26.5 |
| Team Curran (II) | 26 |

| Alliance MMA (II) | 17.75 |
| AMA Fight Club (II) | 17.5 |
With the addition of bonus points for upset victories, Xtreme Couture moves to the head of the pack, both in Tier I and in the overall rankings. This was due to Martin Kampmann and Michael Chandler both scoring upset victories in their last fights: Kampmann defeating Rick Story and Chandler taking the Bellator championship away from Eddie Alvarez.
On the strength of Nathan Diaz taking out Donald Cerrone, Cesar Gracie Fight Team takes over top spot in Tier II. Chad Mendes' loss drops Team Alpha Male a few spots down to 3rd in the Tier II category, while Bart Palaszewski and Team Curran move into second spot. Meanwhile, it was business as usual in the third tier with no changes to the top five.
The biggest drop of the week comes from Imperial Athletics, who saw both Melvin Guillard and Anthony Johnson lose by rear naked choke in the first round. They fall from seventh all the way out of the overall rankings. Meanwhile, thanks to wins from Charlie Brenneman and Jim Miller, AMA Fight Club makes their first appearance in the top 15.

How familiar are you with Finney's Hit Squad?
Trying to find out some info on them and there isn’t even a wikipedia page

It's Robbie Lawler and Matt Hughes that run the team, out of Illinois
Dustin Jacoby, who is fighting this weekend, fights out of that gym and as far as I can tell so does Brian Foster, whose promising UFC career was cut short after he failed a pre-fight physical due to a brain hemorrhage, which required surgery. Although it was a serious head injury, he’s bounced back with two straight wins and is now in Bellator. I wonder if the UFC will ever take him in again? He was 3-2 in the Octagon, never went to a decision and won two fight night bonuses.
Basically Robbie Lawler is the only guy on the radar from the squad rankings wise.
The website is pretty nice. Check out the cost of a three month training camp. About the same as a week long trip to Mexico!

Black House is not a camp.
To call that congeries of loosely associated fighters would be like calling the Blackzillians a camp.
No va. We are all one.

These are the ranked guys I have in Black House....
Lyoto Machida
Anderson Silva
Junior Dos Santos
Rafael Cavalcante
Big Nog
Lil Nog
Ronaldo Souza
Would you call them Team Nogueira? Who shouldn’t be on that list?
Thanks for the comment. The biggest problem I’ve come across with this project is accurately grouping the fighters together.

Big/Lil Nog
Are Team Nogueira.
JDS has his own camp within the X-Gym crowd, believe, although JDS moves to Team Nogueira a bunch. Not sure about Feijao’s exact affiliation, but I believe he might still be X-Gym.
Jacare seems to be a ronin, but may be with Anderson, who has a separate camp from Machida, who stays mainly with his family and brings people in.
Plus Aldo is mostly with Nova Uniao, although guys like Renan Barao spend a lot of time with their own camps and come into NU for the big stuff.
Black House is a management thing dreamed up by Ed Soares and it seems to have stuck on a level that’s hard to understand for how little time these fighters actually spend together at this time.

Yeah I have Aldo and Barao as NU teammates.
Anderson and JDS are not with Team Nogueira?
I feel like I see a lot of footage of them all together. Plus Anderson and JDS are both trained by Luis Dorea, aren’t they?
Where do you get this info from, if I may ask? Not that I don’t believe you, I’m just wondering where I might find a better place than my current sources, which are Wikipedia, Sherdog Fight Finder, training videos, interview snippets and some other random places on the net.

I have the same basic sources as you, but paid a ton of attention to who was with whom in the actual training videos. I’ve never seen Anderson and JDS really training together in the Portuguese language-only videos, which generally are candid and not Soares-composed puff pieces.
Let me ask a few friends who know better and see what exactly they say. Have to avoid mentioning “Black House” as they’ll fly off the handle.

So you're saying I need to pay more attention?
I can do that. ;)
Thanks again for sharing that info, I appreciate it.
