UFC 142 Fallout: Anthony "Rumble" Johnson Cut By UFC

After missing weight by 11 pounds for his fight with Vitor Belfort, Anthony Johnson has been cut by the UFC.

From MMA Junkie:

"This is his third time," White said of Johnson's failure to make weight for the third time in his octagon career. "Three strikes and you're gone."

This comes as no surprise, especially since Rumble looked awful in the fight and was submitted in the opening frame by Belfort. Anthony is now at a serious crossroad in his career. Hopefully he can get his mind and body together, win a few fights in smaller shows and make his way back to the UFC.

This should also put everyone else in the company on notice (I'm looking at you, Thiago Alves). Part of being a professional fighter is making weight and if you habitually fail, you should be gone.

Not Making Weight

Man look at Lorenzo Fertitta in that picture, he looks pissed lol..

The weight cut issue to me is kind of crazy..Before I started really getting into MMA, I had no idea that fighters cut such huge amounts of weight prior to a fight to make a specific weight class. It seems kind of crazy to me that these guys walk around, in some cases, 50 pounds heavier than the class they fight in.

I feel that there should be some kind of limit imposed by the UFC as to walk around weight versus the exceptable weight class you can fight in. Of course the problem there is that who governs that and how can you know for sure what the actual walk around weight is.

So the only logical conclusion/result that can exist is doing what Dana and company did and that is cutting a fighter for not making weight and 3 times seems sufficient. Another possibility to entertain could be interesting, what about forcing the fighter into a higher wait class after two missed cuts and not allowing them to go back to that weight again?

Is it all cut and dry..do you think the UFC is doing the right thing? What are your thoughts?

Without knowing too much about weight cutting...

…it certainly seems to me, based on testimonials from King Mo and other former wrestlers, that you eventually lose the ability to cut large amounts of weight. The body just can’t handle it after a point and will shut down on subsequent attempts.

Either that or guys who habitually miss weight are simply lazy and are not starting their cuts from a low enough number.

I’d personally support a tightening up of the guidelines surrounding the weigh in process.

Not sure about this....

But it would be great if Rumble were to enter the Bellator MW tourney. Rumble v Falcao would basically be a shot at Belfort Lite.
