UFC 142: Out Of Line Joe Rogan Harasses Mario Yamasaki After Silva vs Prater
In the second bout of the UFC 142 PPV card, Erick Silva blitzed Carlo Prater and earned himself an apparent stoppage victory via strikes early in the first round. After Mario Yamasaki waved the fight off, the talk began in the cage and the announcement was made that Silva was being disqualified because of strikes to the back of the head, giving Carlo Prater the victory.
The ruling was questionable upon viewing the replay but what is unquestionably out of line was Joe Rogan calling out Mario Yamasaki repeatedly in the cage after the fight. He incessantly stated how bad Mario's decision was in front of a worldwide audience in one of the most unprofessional displays of broadcasting I have ever seen. It was right on par with Jim Gray's treatment of Pete Rose at the 1999 World Series.
It is, in no way, Joe Rogan's duty to discipline or take any kind of action upon referees. He has no authority and was only able to render his decision on Mario's decision after multiple replays that Mario is not entitled to viewing in the moment. We have seen many fights overturned due to incorrect stoppages and that is the job of the athletic commissions, not post-fight interviewers. Joe Rogan has no right and no place getting in the cage and taking Mario Yamasaki to task over his decision.
I am not defending the ruling Mario made in this fight. I think it is an incredibly tough decision to make during a huge flurry by a fighter trying to finish his opponent. The higher ups may change the decision to a No Contest and they may not. In all honesty, this loss for Erick Silva will most likely end up being his version of Jon Jones DQ loss to Matt Hamill. He will not lose any steam and will continue his ascension.
Joe Rogan has a job to do and it is not to reprimand officials on PPV. He has never berated the judges like that or any other referee and to do that to Mario is just flat out embarrassing for everyone involved.

totally agree
it was atrocious. and as i’ve already pointed out, by insisting that there was no foul, rogan is giving himself over to the heat of the moment and contradicting a standard he himself has publicized. rogan’s suggested that the back of the head be considered that part of the head beyond the arch of a pair of headphones. silva’s punches fell past that line.
SquishingMachine, now at HeadKickLegend.com
not to mention
as the replays kept coming he had to keep contradicting himself on the mic.
Absolutely horrible work by him here.

Big John draws up a different definition, usually referred to as the “mohawk”. But either way, what Rogan did was WAY out of line.
The center of the octagon is not the place for it, UFC Tonight would be the perfect forum for that discussion, though and I hope we see that on Tuesday.

I would love to hear why people are voting "No" in the poll. As of this comment, it is 30 for yes and 28 for no

I voted no
If Mario makes the decision, he then should be able to justify it. He can justify his original position without even turning to the replay. If he can’t explain why he made a decision then why is he in the cage in the first place? Even if Mario said “I believe the back of the head consists of everything on the head other than the nose,” then we could discuss strikes to the back of the head as a rule.
There was no standup. There was no warning. There was only a ref making a bad decision that he couldn’t justify or explain.
There was no opportunity for a stand up or a warning, though
Carlo was absolutely done so there was really no other option for Mario given what he saw.

Ok
Then he could have explain how he saw the damage from those 2 strikes and not the other dozen that resulted in the end of the fight. If it wasn’t severe it shouldn’t have ended the fight. The rule states:
(b) Disqualification occurs after any combination of three of the fouls listed in (a) above or after a referee determines that a foul was intentional and flagrant.
If Mario cannot at least recite the reasoning of the rule than he shouldn’t be a ref.
That is nonsense. Mario is one of the best refs in the game.

This is BS!
OK, I said that Roagan was not out of line. This is a sport. The ref did NOT follow the rules. Where was the stand up? Where was the warning? Where was the questioning to whether Prater could continue? These are parts of a fight’s stoppage that were ignored. It looked like he stopped it, then second-guessed his decision and put out an excuse. Were some of those to the back of the head? Borderline, 1 or 2 at the end. But the fight was being stopped already. Someone in Brazil paid this douche off. If the reds were hired by the UFC, I would say Rogan was out of line, but they aren’t, just like the judges. Rip them a new one when they fuck up.
Joe Rogan does not speak for the UFC
and he does not speak for every MMA fan, if we don’t shrink this mans head a bit this sort of thing will continue, and at some point you’ll see a spot that you think Joe is 100% wrong in, but because people support him here, he’ll think that he has the right to speak for the community.

So somebody in Brazil paid Mario off to make the rising star, jungle fight champion, only fighter in the cage that still lives in Brazil lose his fight in front of his countrymen?

total bush league bullshit. I can only hope that the board has a little talk with this commentator who thinks he is more than he is!

Try to look at this from a different perspective
When watching Ufc often as I do and watch the post fight press conferences interviews ect..then you will usually hear Joe Rogan , Mike Goldberg , and Dana White (and pretty much every fighter) complain about referees officiating on quite a regular basis. Hell you can look up a lot of it on YouTube. So I kinda figure that plays a bit into him saying what he did.
Also if you re watch the fight right after the match was called when everyone thought that Silva had won, Rogan specifically said
Quote: "This is what he did in his first fight “.”He just swarms on guys over and over hammer fist, hammer fist""and you can see Carlo trying to cover up and those are all legal shots Mike, all of them to the side of the head none of them to the back of the head"
Ck so we can assume, (and yeah I know I shouldn’t but hey what’s the internet for really) after saying that
1: He’d be fairly pissed at the ref for aforementioned calls (such as the Hamill fight) , but with that kinda made him snap a bit.
2: After having said that they were all legal shots had he been quiet about it, the internet and media in general would of tore him a new one. One of the reasons people love or hate Rogan is his uncanny ability to call bullshit when he sees it even if speaking about his own product / company he works for.
Now with all that said .. was it unprofessional yes I do believe he took it a bit far, however if this in some way makes refs stop to judge their actions a bit more so that will not happen again , then it was worth a bit of bad press over it.
I can understand why the Op is upset and even though I do agree he took it to far, But…Really……Jim Gray…that’s a bit much imo. Gray was trying to get a scoop and being quite a asshat going about it He just would not let it go and kept falling into to more and more dickishness. Right or wrong Rogan wasn’t doing this to get “paid” or further his career.
In this instance I quite well feel Rogan is honestly angry (and has been for a very long time) at the state of the officiating and how that bad calls are handled by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Does that excuse him for taking it too far or at least doing it in a not so public manner… No, not in the least… but I can’t go all Jim Grey on him either.
I just kinda wanted to speak to a different side other than just Pro Joe or Anti Joe flame war that these conversations inevitably fall into.
Good post Enixmage.
I watched at the bar and they had the sound on Tebow/Patriots, so I missed all of this. It’s hard for me to fully judge until I see a replay. As someone who also follows the NFL pretty closely, I can tell you that every week I hear people bitch and complain that the refs never have to answer to their actions. They don’t attend press conferences and are never fined for blown calls. I like that Rogan put him on the spot and asked him what happened. Was it the right time, or too confrontational, or unprofessional? I’ll have to wait until I see a video to truly judge.

Glad you wrote this article, had hoped to see similar pieces on other sites as well
It was completely unprofessional and inappropriate, Rogan acts like he’s some kind of oracle of right and wrong. It’s not his place to insult and question the referees decision so blatantly right there and then. It really pissed me off, he went way overboard with that one.
See and learn the secret death touch!
I think that if he really wanted to do this that there have been endless incidents that were FAR more egregious than this one. Belfort v. Akiyama, Belfort v. Franklin and on the other side of the coin, Lesnar v. Mir I were all far better examples of a time where something was more deserving of being said.
The only other part is, find a more constructive and professional way to do it. Honestly, it was a big “look at me” thing for him and it was kind of sad.

I agree completely with your article, Earl. It would be great to see someone interview some of the other refs to get their reaction to Rogan taking it upon himself to jam a ref who just made a controversial call without giving him any warning. My guess is that guys like Big John or Tan Dan would have told Rogan to shove the mic up his ass for a comment….or done it for him.
The fact that there’s still debate about the legality of the shots when viewers watch it in slow-mo replay tells you how hard it would be for a ref watching it live to judge which were and were not clean shots. As someone pointed out in another thread, the real controversy should have been over whether there was intent (meaning a DQ would be appropriate) or lack of intent (I think that would have resulted in an NC…pretty sure about that).
And the fact that there can be debate even with the benefit of replays makes Rogan look all the more like a dick for deciding to show up a ref before a hostile crowd.
Rogan's job is to do immediate post-fight interviews
If he chooses to interview a referee regarding his decision to make a questionable call leading to a DQ in order for those watching at home to understand, so be it. I’d encourage him to even take it to interviewing judges about their questionable decisions after fights.
It might have been done poorly but you have to admit, the idea of a post-fight interview with a referee/judge after a questionable call is most certainly a good one.
Rogan was doing his job well, finally.just because you aren’t used to seeing this doesn’t mean it shouldn’t happen more often.if this is harassment, then what do you call what Jim Gray does in this video and countless other post-fight interviewers in boxing.when a ref makes a mistake that robs someone of a victory, they should be called out on it.

Thanks for condensing Brent Brookhouse's post on Bloody Elbow into a comment. With the same video and evrything.
I still think he was absolutely out of line. Trying to justify his actions by saying that it wasn’t as harsh and dickish as something someone else did is hardly anything to use as a basis for clearing Rogan here.

Rogan did the right thing
Everyone needs to be held accountable , if a fighter had just been d.q.’d for doing something as idiotic as M.Y. you know Rogan woulda called him out .
