Weekend Results: Danyo Ilunga Wins in Germany, Andrei Stoica Upset in Romania
While last weekend certainly won't go down as the busiest of September in the world of kickboxing (that distinction will clearly belong to next weekend, September 24-25), there were a number of notable bouts happening throughout Europe and elsewhere.
Perhaps the biggest bout of the weekend saw It's Showtime 95 kg. champion Danyo Ilunga meet Mohammed Boubkari, a dangerous heavyweight that many fans are unfamiliar with, in Germany. Elsewhere, fans were treated to contests featuring the likes of Andrei Stoica, Paul Slowinski, and upcoming 60 kg. fighter Milos Anic.
Thailand vs. Challenger 2011 Series: Thailand vs. Europe
Elite Boxing led the weekend action with the Thailand vs. Europe edition of their Thailand vs. Challenger 2011 Series. The card was headlined by a kickboxing bout between It's Showtime 95 kg. MAX champion Danyo Ilunga and late replacement Mohammed Boubkari. Ilunga walked away with a decision victory, but Boubkari, who has found success in the Netherlands and performed well in Enfusion's 95 kg. series, reportedly performed well in the bout. Similar to Ilunga's originally scheduled opponent, Ramazan Ramazanov, Mohammed Boubkari is a fighter with a proven ability to compete at a high level - even if not on the biggest of stages.
While fairly low-profile, the win over Mohammed Boubkari is an important one for Danyo Ilunga. The Congolese-German fighter came out of nowhere to win his It's Showtime title earlier this year, and there have been a number of questions regarding his ability to win after a strange title defense against Nenad Pagonis. Ilunga moves on to another potential test, as he'll compete in a four-man tournament at Fight Night Mannheim 5 in October. The It's Showtime champion will follow that up with a second defense of his title in the Canary Islands on November 12th.
Other bouts on the Thailand vs. Europe card saw Jaochalam, Thanongdet, Nonsai, and Anatoli Hunanyan pick up wins.
More results from this past weekend after the jump.
Wako-Pro World Grand Prix 2011: Romania vs. Serbia
The first semifinal of the Wako-Pro World Grand Prix 2011 series also took place over the weekend, as a five-man Serbian team traveled to meet the Romanian side in contest with a few interesting match ups. The biggest news of the event was surely Andrei Stoica's surprising stoppage loss to Serbia's Jovan Kaludjerovic. The loss marks the third of Stoica's career and puts him at 2-2 on the year. Stoica loss dropped a bout to Redouan Cairo in April.
The Serbian side took another bout as 60 kg. favorite Milos Anic won by decision in his bout against Florin Lupu.
Knees of Fury 34
Paul Slowinski picked up his third win of the year in Australia, as he knocked out Steven Banks in the third round of their contest at Knees of Fury 34. Fellow Australians Kym Johnson and Myles Simpson picked up stoppage wins on the card as well.
