Kickboxing 2011: The Top Bouts Through the First Half of the Year
As this weekend marks the first significant kickboxing action in the second half of 2011, it seems a fine opportunity to look back at the top kickboxing bouts through the first half of the year.
Given the inactivity of K-1, the year in kickboxing has thus far been led by the rise of promotions including It's Showtime, Fight Code, United Glory, Krush, SuperKombat, and more. These promotions have offered a significant number of quality bouts and the following list can in no way do that justice.
The list includes strictly kickboxing bouts, and is hindered somewhat by the availability of videos for many fights (links will be posted where embedded video is not possible). The bouts listed come in no particular order. That said, enjoy the bouts and, to make things a bit more interesting, feel free to vote for your favorite.
Hesdy Gerges vs. Daniel Ghita - It's Showtime Amsterdam Sporthallen Zuid, March 6th

Javier Hernandez vs. Karim Bennoui - It's Showtime Madrid, June 18th
Koya Urabe vs. Sung Hyun Lee - Krush First Generation Kings Tournament Round 2, January 9th
Mohamed Khamal vs. Robin van Roosmalen - Fightclub Presents: It's Showtime 2011, May 21st
Shintaro Matsukura vs. Yuya Yamamoto - Krush 70 kg. Tournament Quarterfinal, May 29th
Sahak Parparyan vs. Amir Zeyada - Fightclub Presents: It's Showtime 2011, May 21st

well
considering i like only heavyweights or +85 kilos divisions, Gerges-Gita was fight of the year; but UNTIL now
Really wanted to pick Gerges-Ghita
But Hernandez-Bennoui was such a great underdog victory. Hernandez was clearly outclassed from a technical standpoint, but he kept his head in the game and wouldn’t let up on Bennoui—definitely the highlight of the IS Madrid card.
wow
wow not noiri vs yuiji? 5 others could have fit the bill & were equally if not more exciting than any of these listed
What were your thoughts on Lee/Urabe?
I thought Lee took that extension round.
What everyone needs to do is calm down, take a deep breath, and prepare their bodies for the Thunderdome.

The same thing I thought every time I watched it.
It’s been a couple months at this point, maybe I’ll watch it again just to see.

I went with Hernandez-Bennoui
Winning it in Spain was that much cooler.
My second-place would be Danyo Ilunga vs. Nened Pagonis from It’s Showtime Poland. Intense finish.

I had to go with "Other"
As good as the Ghita Gerges fight was, I thought the clinic Souwer put on against Ouzgni was better. I had three reasons for it. 1. I am a huge Souwer fan and seeing him look that smooth again in the ring was very very nice. 2. Ouzgni tried his best but had 0 answers for Andy Souwer’s technique and yet still came forward and put on his best. 3. Because Ghita could have taken this fight if he had gone to the body early. Gerges dragged him into a head hunting contest with better defense and Ghita obliged him when his weapons were elsewhere. It was frustrating to watch.
I'm confused as to how Gerges/Ghita is winning so handily.
Ghita’s best Mark Hunt impression was fun and all but the fight as a whole didn’t blow me away in the same way that Matsukura/Yamamoto, Hernandez/Bennoui, or even Khamal/van Roosmalen to a lesser extent did. People just love their HWs I guess.

The judge who scored Parparyan/Zeyada 50-45 for Amir should be shot.
He/she is incompetent. Love to hear the justification for not scoring a single round for the guy who consistently landed cleaner, more effective blows.

My vote goes to Matsukura – Yamamoto, what a great fight that was. High-paced, back-and-forth, technical action. Sick combinations. Very nice.
