MMHK 6/13 to 6/19: It's Showtime Madrid; K-1 Champ Overeem in Action

It's Showtime Madrid Provides New Champ: Although Karim Bennoui entered Saturday's event as the 61 kg. MAX champion, Javier Hernandez left with the belt. Don't feel too bad if you're not familiar with Hernandez, not many people are. He's done well for himself in Spain, fighting out of Team RR in Cordoba. Expect to keep seeing situations like this arise for It's Showtime in the near future. There is a lot of talent out there and many of the divisions that we're seeing each event really need to be fleshed out more. That said, both Hernandez and the now former champion Bennoui are two people to pay attention to. Hernandez has turned into a real solid boxer over the past year or two and Bennoui will continue to be difficult to beat when he plays to his strengths.
Alistair Overeem Wins, Insane Debate Ensues: Hey look, it's mixed martial arts. Alistair Overeem walked away with the win against Fabricio Werdum in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix on Saturday night, but nobody is content with that. Was Overeem's performance impressive? Of course not. Did Fabricio Werdum win? No. Should Werdum be ashamed of himself? I don't know about all that - you can decide. Regardless, the fact is that Overeem was hit more frequently than one would hope and it's going to open up a lot of room for people to question him. He should still be the tournament favorite, but a potential final between him and, say, Sergei Kharitonov may be looking a bit more appealing after this.
K-1 63 KG. Tournament to Stream Live: It's already been talked about, but here's a reminder. The K-1 World MAX 2011 63 kg. Japan tournament will be streaming live on June 25th. K-1 is getting in on the trend of streaming events on YouTube, which is good news in my estimation. If you've been paying attention to the weight class, you know the guys competing. The super fight between Albert Kraus and Yoshihiro Sato at 70 kg. should also be solid.
Fight VideosJavier Hernandez vs. Karim Bennoui - It's Showtime Madrid, June 18th in Madrid, Spain
Why you should watch: This is one of the better championship bouts you'll see. Hernandez and Bennoui go back and forth for five rounds, the decision is close, the action is good, all that. No YouTube link on this one yet, so nothing embed... Just enjoy it.
Murthel Groenhart vs. Rafi Zouheir - It's Showtime Madrid, June 18th in Madrid, Spain
Why you should watch: The bout became a good bit more interesting as soon as Groenhart was announced as a replacement for William Diender. What ensued was a great, short fight, marred by a bit of controversy. You know you love controversy. Watch the first time Zouheir hits the canvas - whatever leaves him glassy-eyed from there on out, do you think it was legal? The Spanish fans are crying foul. Again, nothing to embed, watch it here.
Sagatdeo vs. Saenchai - Lumpinee Stadium, June 10th in Bangkok, Thailand
Why you should watch: It's a few days old at this point, but come on, it's these two. That's why you should watch.

I'm honestly a little surprised by Krush and K-1 pulling ahead on this one.
Who are you guys liking the most out of the fighters under 70 kg.?
That's actually quite an interesting poll
The thing is, K-1/Krush are pretty much exclusively using Japanese fighters right now. It’s Showtime is branching out a bit more. It comes to a point where we don’t have much basis on how to compare them since there hasn’t been much overlap

For sure.
I was hoping to plant the seed in people’s minds… maybe some time down the line we’ll be fortunate to have some basis for real comparison.
