Strikeforce Challengers: Beerbohm vs. Healy Open Workouts
This Friday, Strikeforce is putting on another event for their Challengers series. As a resident of Austin, Texas I made it out to South Austin Gym to see the Open Workouts. Strikeforce had Lyle Beerbohm, Carlo Prater, and Lee Higgins available for the press to promote the event. Unfortunately, my battery for my camera leaked in the charger the night before so I don't have any photos from the work outs to post but I have purchased a new battery for the weigh ins and event.
Lyle Beerbohm was the first to the mat answering questions as he wrapped his hands. He gave some background about his battle with addiction to meth amphetamines and his time in jail. He had great things to say about how MMA has put him in a good place and from a outside observer, I can say he looks happy. He was in high spirits about his life and his training camp. He is close to being on weight and had a good camp. There were some issues in the beginning with a snow mobile accident but he's in top shape going into the event. He talked about the documentary he has coming out about his trials and tribulations in turning his life around called "No Submission" and also gave insight that he'll be one of the featured fighters in "Fight Life" a documentary that focuses on the lives of Jake Shields and Lyle Beerbohm.
I spoke with Carlo Prater for a bit and he seems to be happy about fighting at a catchweight. He's currently 10 pounds over and was goofing around for the cameras. He talked a lot about how his camp focused on wrestling and he's finally putting in the time on the mat which should translate well as he has a slick jiu jitsu game and is a solid judoka. I asked him about the Shine tournament as well and he said "it was a mess but the most fun i've ever had fighting. I'd love to do more 3 fights in a night tournaments but I doubt that will ever happen with them (Shine)".
Yves Edwards showed up as well and I got to chat with him a little bit. He's extremely personable and talked a bit about his training routine leading up to his fight with Cody Mackenzie at UFC Fight for the Troops. He jokingly gave Prater a hard time about not training with him anymore but it was all in good fun. He'll be attending the event to support his old training partner.
For those in the Austin, Texas area the weigh ins tomorrow are free for the public at the Cedar Park Center at 5pm.
If you have't yet gotten tickets and want to see a solid event, get them here and use promo code PUNCH. There is a big discount if you do this.
I'll have photos and coverage for the weigh ins and live Play by Play for the event on Friday. Get pumped!

Looks like fun, wish I could be there too
I love the Challengers series from SF. I think its a great, inexpensive way to enjoy mma. Glad to see young Couture getting in on the series too
