Julie Kitchen feeling snubbed by London Olympics committee
Julie Kitchen took to her Facebook page earlier today to vent frustration over being turned down by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games for duties as an Olympic torchbearer. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are slated to take place in London, England, and the Cornwall-based "Queen of Muay Thai" was hoping to represent her hometown and chosen sport by running with the flame.
From Kitchen's Facebook wall:
im a bit devastated as just got turned down by seb coe to carry he olympic in my hometown,i guess 13 x world titles, 3 x european, 7 british an intercontinantal and an english title are not enough nowadays x
Pretty convincing argument.
"Seb Coe" refers to former middle distance runner and Olympic gold medalist Sebastian Coe, chairman of the committee and driving force behind London's bid for the 2012 games. Obviously put off by the development, Kitchen has since "liked" several fan responses on her wall that personally insult Coe (jokingly or otherwise), including "I never liked that man. Such a smug look on his face," "The man's a moron!" and "what a d-bag...stab him with a spoon!" among others.
Says the official London games site about the torchbearer selection process:
Those shortlisted were put forward to selection panels across the UK, who judged each story anonymously. With the standard so high, there were difficult decisions to be made as to who would be one of the 8,000 people carrying the Flame. Nominees had around a one in 11 chance of being a Torchbearers.
Though it's a symbolic honor that, at the end of the day, means less than Kitchen's large collection of championship belts, it would have been nice to see her represented at the games.
Despite organized efforts to get it approved as such, Muay Thai is not an Olympic sport.
