Forrest Griffin Tweeting Incident Illustrates... Nothing

Doh. Pic via video.ufc.tv

To start it off, if you missed it, here's what happened. Mr. Griffin tweeted the following:

Rape is the new missionary

Oops.

Listen. Rape jokes are a high risk, low reward concept. You really have to nail it (very punny, I know) in order for even some people to get a laugh out of it, and quite frankly, that was about as humorous as oatmeal. Even them some people will get pissed because of the subject matter, so it's really hard to get ahead (again) in this situation. Forrest was either unaware, forgot or didn't give a damn about this and went ahead and made a bit of a fool of himself to anyone with a computer.

That's the problem with the internet, social media and specifically communicating on them. Your words reach everyone and are there for all of posterity's sake. I've definitely had some instances of foot-in-mouth disease before and I probably will again, but one thing I've gotten better at is trying to limit my damage. Don't put stuff somewhere where it can be used against you. Ever want to run for office? Seriously, mind your Ps and Qs your entire life, or you might find yourself Anthony Weiner'd (yay, another phallic image!).

Naturally, this snafu has made everyone involved look bad (everyone being Forrest), but some people want to take it to the next level. Brent Brookhouse over at Bloody Elbow thinks he should be punished in some way by the UFC for his transgression. I don't necessarily agree with this, but it isn't without some merit. I just think it should be a slap on the wrist. Look, it was a bad joke. It was poor taste and shouldn't have been said outside the comfort of his living room amongst people that would laugh it off and forget it within 10 minutes. That isn't what Twitter is. So he screwed up. Is it any worse than Rampage dry humping Heather Nichols a couple years ago? Or motorboating Karyn Bryant just earlier this year?

He wasn't punished for either of those by the way, outside of his own apologizing and what have you, and those were actual physical acts, as opposed to just some rambling on the interwebs.

Were Nick Diaz and Joe Riggs ever punished for their fight in the hospital? Did the UFC ever fine Rampage (seems to be a recurring name here) for his energy-drink-fueled romp in his monster truck? I'll save you the trouble of Googling it, the answer is no. Personally, if I'm Dana White, and I'm asked about this, my polite response would be "No. He apologized, and he has to make whatever amends he feels he should make. Who knows, maybe a sponsor will drop him? When you say stuff, you get a reaction, and you have to live with it. Sometimes, like myself, you just blab it out there and you have to deal with the repercussions. That's what I do and that's what Forrest will have to do. He won't be paying any fine to the UFC."

This is mostly how I feel as well, but that's pretty much exactly what I can picture coming out of Dana's mouth if he gets asked about this. He's candid and quite frankly, an idiot sometimes as well. But he deals with the consequences of his words on his own. Perhaps Forrest will use this as an opportunity to make a donation to a shelter for rape victims? That'd really be the best possible outcome here - some good coming from an otherwise nonsensical situation.

The thing missing here, which I semi-ironically mentioned on twitter

is that he didn’t tell a joke. There is literally no humor in that statement. No wordplay, no punchline, no comedic twist or irony. That tweet can’t be called humor because there is literally nothing humorous about it.

Forrest made a statement that abuse has become the standard of sexual activity, which could be sadly insightful if expounded upon. But he had no intention of doing that. He said that abuse and violence should be expected for sexually active people, cheapening the trauma of those who suffered through it by calling it a regular experience. It’s pathetic, insulting, and he should face consequences for it. Whether it’s the UFC burying him a bit publicly, losing fans, losing sponsorships, or losing publishing deals, he should face consequences.

I did compare it to oatmeal

I can think of a number of very tasteless jokes (some of which are funny, and some of which involve rape). I also don’t really think that was what he was thinking when he wrote that, but if you want to read that deeply into it, shrug.

It's not that it was tasteless. It wasn't a joke.

You can say “Thank god it was only boys involved in the PSU scandal. There won’t be any Paterno-ty tests now!” and that’s a joke. It’s not funny and in bad taste but uses wordplay and a pun. Those are two compenents of humor. I fall closer to the Carlin camp of you can make a joke about anything, but Forrest didn’t do anything like that. He did not tell a joke. He just said something awful.

It’s like hearing a 17 year old girl say something wrong, get corrected, and reply “oh just kidding!” No, you weren’t kidding. You’re just a fucking idiot.

I thought

his flippant tweet about child rape was significantly worse than his ensuing “joke”.

Rape is an abomination

But so is gotcha mma journalism. And I don’t mean you, Cory. But this isn’t the first time certain MMA writers have stepped up to the podium to patronize the fighters they cover for being inappropriate. Why is it when Brett Rogers is accused of beating his wife (I’m taking no position w/ respect to the merit of those accusations), you never read any articles on MMA sites about how horrible domestic violence is, or how horrible it is for MMA when an fighter is accused of engaging in domestic violence? Instead, they report the facts of the matter (which is exactly what they should do). But when a fighter tweets a tasteless joke, some (and by some, I mean one) can’t wait to admonish him on their site? I know Forest is a popular guy, but enough with the knee jerk reactions.

ok a couple things

For starters, if you state a claim as fact, when it hasn’t been proven in a court of law, you can be held liable. As in monies liable. That is why you often get a “nothing but the facts” report, because if one doesn’t handle the editorializing properly (and lets face is, most bloggers and a ton of writers have never been to journalism school), you can find yourself with legal fees. That is why he’s an alleged wife-beater and not a wife-beater for starters.

That said, there were a TON of articles blasting Rogers. Numerous people were calling for White to fire him (which he did) and lambasted Rogers. I’m sorry that you missed it, but there was a large amount of vitriol aimed at Brett, definitely more so than this incident with Forrest. I’m not really gonna call out Brookhouse or anyone else who feels that way, because I can see part of that side, but really, this is just a stupid error in judgement by someone who might not have all his marbles anyway. Poor timing given the Penn St. incident and the UFC going more mainstream on FOX, but shrug. This is mostly a non-issue to me.

Gotcha MMA Journalism = Rape?

Holy hyperbole. Unless, of course, you don’t have a firm grasp on what an abomination is. Which seems likely. Also, knee-jerk reactions are unthinking, flailing and without appropriate context. So I’m not sure you know what that term means either.

I used to think so too

but it’s actually quite awesome. Instead of a news feed consisting of banal shit my old high school friends are now up to (ala facebook), I’m getting articles from Carl Zimmer, Mo Constandi, and Jonah Lehrer in real time. Not that my high school friends aren’t good people: they’re just not as interesting as the latest news on toxoplasma gondii.

It wasn’t a singular incident. Even after scrubbing his twitter account there are still multiple rape jokes. Because it is a constant talking point with Griffin.
