Japanese veterans invade Australia for "Nitro MMA"
The year 2010 has been big for Australian MMA. Bellator champion, Hector Lombard, brought attention to the quality CFC (Cage Fighting Championships) promotion. The Ultimate Fighting Championship came to Sydney in February with UFC 110, and Impact Fighting Championships took advantage of a slower period of major MMA in July to make a splash.
On August 27th, another intriguing card will come to us from "The Land Down Under".
"Nitro MMA" will hold an event in Brisbane, Australia and it'll bring a few familiar faces to fans of Japanese MMA.
The flyweight (57 kg/126 pd.) main event will feature former Shooto contender, Daniel Lima, in his first fight since September 2007. In his last fight, Lima defeated WEC veteran, Kenji Osawa, via split decision. That win shot him up to #2 in the Shooto rankings before an injury left him on the sidelines. He will return to action against Cage Force and Shooto veteran, Seiji "Oz" Otsuka. Otsuka comes in at 10-9-5 and has fought quality competition such as Takeya Mizugaki, So Tazawa, and holds a notable victory over Luciano Azevedo (the only man to defeat Jose Aldo).
The lightweight co-feature will pit Queensland native, Jai Bradney, against the high-flying, Daisuke Nakamura. Bradney fought on the first Impact FC card on July 10th in losing effort to Thiago Meller. Nakamura should be familiar with casual and hardcore MMA fans with his fights in DREAM, M-1, ASTRA, and PRIDE. Although he has lost three of his last five bouts, Nakamura is always a fan-favorite due to his exciting submission style.
Australian bantamweight prospect, Michael Mortimer, will also compete on the card against an opponent to be announced.
The full card can be viewed here.

I’m really excited for whoever Mike Mortimer fights. The guy’s got a really solid ground game.
MMA events in Queensland and especially in the south-east corner (Brisbane, Gold & Sunshine Coasts) have had a massive increase in attendance this year. Over 2008-2009 there’d be a solid number about 200-300 and that gradually grew towards the end of 2009 too. Since the beginning of this year most local events are consistently pulling around 750-1000 and that’s a card full of locals fighting without any ex-DREAM, UFC, WEC, PRIDE, etc fighters.
I’ve been meaning to write a fan post about the growth for months now but haven’t found the time yet haha.
