No More Heroes: Fedor Emelianenko Taps Out to Fabricio Werdum
I really want people to stop and think when they reflect upon last night. So stop and think; reflect upon how you define greatness. How do you define greatness? The prognosticators are out in full force last night and today, all looking to tell us what it really means that Fedor Emelianenko, the Last Emperor, has finally dropped his first official loss and that it was in a Strikeforce cage to Fabricio Werdum. There is talk of there being no fighters outside of UFC who can claim a #1 spot, Fedor should be fighting at Light Heavyweight, that Fedor hasn't been good since 2005, and much, much more.
Something very important happened last night and it involved one of the greatest fighters in MMA's rather brief history. As I pointed out the other day, Fedor was the last holdout of an older guard, he was an anomaly within the modern world of MMA. All of the heroes from Fedor's peak had fallen off, including Frank Shamrock who narrated his own retirement highlight reel last night, Chuck Liddell who has been brutally KO'd more times than I'd like to recall, Andrei Arlovski whose bouts with depression are well known, Mirko Cro Cop whose aggression and power will never be matched, even by himself, and Wanderlei Silva whose brutal knees and kicks struck fear into everybody and now are just a distant, hazy memory.
Fedor was the Last Emperor and last night was the night when the modern world passed him by. Fedor represents more than just the PRIDE glory days like you'll see on every nook and cranny of the web right now. You'll hear about nuthuggers, PRIDE fanboys, Zuffa fanboys, Zuffa haters, PRIDE haters. Those are all just strange justifications for opinions and for dissenting opinions, but what you won't see is discussion about how Fedor represents everything that was beautiful and magical about such a brutal, fickle and sometimes glorious sport.
A short, chubby bald man with cold, steely eyes was able to become a superhero and for ten years went without a single loss, dispatching the greatest names in the history of Mixed Martial Arts without flinching, just enduring pain inflicted upon him and then delivering just enough to have his hand raised in victory. Last night was the night where the unstoppable samurai with his sword came face to face with a Western gatling gun for the first time and was more than willing to accept his fate; Fabricio Werdum's legs contracted around his neck like an anaconda sucking the life out of him and putting an end to his reign on the world of MMA.
In a way, last night's fight reminds me of the film "The Last Samurai." Luke Thomas argues that Zuffa has won the battle, finally, and I agree. Last night was the final battle in "The Last Samurai;" Fedor led the last charge with his sword to an honorable death against a dishonorable opponent who will now sit atop the throne of MMA. The only thing is, Werdum doesn't fit into this equation, instead Fedor was fighting for the honor that was left for Japanese MMA, who at one time was seen as unstoppable but due to their honor system, they fell behind the western world. Last night the UFC was able to riddle whatever was left of the memory of Japan's glory days with 37mm bullets and can now lay claim to having only the best of the best, and will find a way to tarnish Fedor Emelianenko and all that he accomplished, as well as all that happened in Japan and Europe to help advance MMA to where it is today.
"And so the days of the Samurai had ended. Nations, like men, it is sometimes said, have their own destiny."

This is the best take on it I have read yet
Seriously great. With Fedor’s last stand, the keys have not only been handed, but the car has been started. What has just happened cannot be undone. This sport, these fighters lives, they sit in Dana White’s hand. Power can be a good thing when done well, power can be a terrible thing when used selfishly. Its just sad to see an era that was already dead completely burned to the ground.

Great article.
I was lucky (or unlucky) enough to have been there in the pavilion to see the great fedor finally succomb to an opponent. We should all take a step back and congratulate the man for what he did for so long. We all knew it would happen if he kept fighting, and everyone seems to be taking it harder than fedor himself. He must feel tremendous relief not carrying the weight of being “THE INDUSTRUCTIBLE FEDOR!!!”. I still feel he’s the best this sport has seen thus far.

Right, this doesn't mean he still isn't the best ever
The best ever can lose if he doesn’t know when to stop. That is Fedor.

Great Piece. I have nothing to add.

But the samurai win! (in the long run)
Because early 20th century Japan is still a shogun culture!
Zombie Fedor will rise again!

I always like to point out to MMA fans that there are two “greatest of all time” in K-1. One is Hoost with the record of 97-21,the other is Aerts with the record of 99-28. If you fight elite level competition, you win some, you lose some, unless your record is protected like in boxing (and sometimes MMA).
32-1 is still spectacular, especially if you think about it how many epic moments did Fedors fights produced. There is no shame in getting tapped by the best HW BJJ fighter in the world.
The MMA fans are often the most awful types of sports fans, and they remind you about this after every big fight, just like now on MMA forums.
"Its not about the size of the dog in the fight...its about the size of the fight in the dog"
Those people are UFC fans, not MMA fans. They have no respect for anything not UFC. Some of them might actually be Zuffa employees.

A truly historic day in MMA...too bad it's all lost
in the midst of Fedor haters feuding about him being overrated.
I’m a huge Fedor fan and was not as sad about him loosing as I thought it would be. He made a mistake, he got caught in a very slick submission. That’s the nature of our sport. I’m also glad he lost to Werdum, who I trained with as his school is right by my house. He’s a truly nice guy; very humble and very underrated as a fighter.
What’s truly a sad thing is that most people on these boards are showing to be UFC fans, not MMA fans (well said FloydJoyMayweatherSR). Dana White has been on a campaign to tarnish Fedor’s reputation and legacy and people are buying it. The disagreement is all in the contract/business and yet DW makes it his mission to link his botched business deal to Fedor’s skill, heart, etc. Never did Fedor or his management come out and say the UFC HW division is ducking Fedor because they won’t succumb to the proposed terms.
I always defended DW but this whole debacle (along with his “:D” twitter post after Fedor’s loss) made me loose a lot of respect for him.
There is nothing dishonorable about Werdum. He came into the fight as an underdog and pulled off the upset.
You don't like wrestling in MMA? Go watch K-1.
