Daily Fights: Cung Le v. Shonie Carter
Another chance to see Cung Le in action here before he takes on Scott Smith for Strikeforce this Saturday. Here, Le faces dynamic MMA veteran Shonie Carter in a Sanshou contest. This is from December, 2001, and is for the IKF Sanshou World title. Notably, this is only 6 months after Carter's legendary spinning backfist KO of Matt Serra, so he was definitely seen as a credible opponent here.
We'll talk more about Sanshou later this week, but for now I'll just say that the rules are essentially kickboxing rules with throws permitted. Le takes full advantage of those rules, showing a wide range of strikes and impressive throws here in this absolute clinic.

Don’t want to be grumpy, but if Carter, who obviously doesn’t know what he’s doing and probably wore the boxing gloves for the first time in his life, is fighting for Sanshou World Title, then, well, it doesn’t say good things about talent pool in Sanshou competition.
I’ve read many times that Le is one of the best strikers in MMA, but to be honest, he fights bums or grapplers. I would like to see him fight some decent fighters to back up that claim.

it's the only good fight there is."

No arguments from me there. Cung uses the strikes really well, but there’s not a ton of high level Sanshou competitors out there that he has faced.
