Badr Hari Allegedy Involved in Assault at Amsterdam Club

Photo

News coming out about Badr Hari today and it's not pretty.  Reports coming out of MMAZone in Amsterdam indicate that Hari was one of four men involved in the assault of a doorman outside an Amsterdam nightclub.

Reports vary a bit, but by all accounts, late Friday night, Hari and three others attempted to gain entry to a nightclub in the Leidseplein district in Amsterdam.  They were denied access to the club by a bouncer based on dress code.  From there, an altercation broke out, and at the end, the doorman was left with a fractured eye socket, a broken nose, and may ultimately need a metal plate in his head.  While the club or the victim have not pressed charges, the police have gotten involved due to the severity of the attack.  At this time, it appears that they are looking for Hari and his friends, who have not turned themselves in or been found.

Clearly, there's a lot of gray area here about what exactly happened.  How did the fight start?  Was Badr directly involved, or was it his companions?  But no matter how you look at it the end result is the same - Hari was involved in some capacity, a man is seriously injured, and the police are searching for Hari.  That's not a good picture.

K-1 has tried hard in the past year to present Hari as a new "mature" fighter following the 2008 GP disqualification fiasco.  But this incident will make it hard to keep that image going.  FEG probably won't be particularly moved by this news unless Hari finds himself in some severe legal trouble (which, if he continues to hide from the police, is certainly a possibility), but it could have an impact on some of his other plans - particularly his desire to potentially fight in the Olympics.

We'll continue to keep you posted on this news as updates become available.

Oh man...

I was so happy to see Badr acting like a mature adult after losing to Semmy at the GP. I really really hope he hasn’t done something now to screw up his career. Fingers crossed that this gets straightened out, and quickly.

Didn’t Alistair do something similar a while back? Is it the new “it” thing to punch out a few bouncers if you are a K-1 fighter in Holland?

Overeem

He did indeed. Hurt his hand in a bouncer fight, which is why he was inactive last summer. And while you may say “well it didn’t hurt his career” (and that’s true) he also didn’t evade the police.

And if you wonder what the deal is with bouncers in Holland, well, then it’s a perfect time to watch Bas Rutten’s Self Defence:

Bas is an insane madman.

He also didn’t leave the bouncer with a plate in his head. And I don’t believe it was a group beating. All of those things change the legal reaction.

Yeah.

The Overeem brothers scuffle involved a female being mistreated, words exchanged and the Overeems against a group of dudes.

The fact this bouncer isn’t pressing charges is interesting. What is interesting about this is there are reports out there that this happened in Feb., but I’m not sure if they are just inaccurate. Most reports say it was this weekend.

This also isn’t Badr’s first run-in with the law. In 2006 there was a dispute that involved a woman being attacked.

Although I’m a big, big fan of Badr Hari, they might need to put this guy in anger management… He always seems to let his emotions go (hence the World GP incident) and now this?

I wouldn’t jump the gun just yet, we don’t know his involvement in this.

Here’s cool picture of him though:

While we’re waiting to see if Badr is going to end up in jail or if this was just a misunderstanding, has anyone heard anything more about why Karaev pulled out of the Le Banner fight? I was so looking forward to seeing Ruslan maybe redeem himself.

How this went down:
Bouncer: “You can’t come in here dressed like that.”
Badr: “Badr angry! Badr SMASH!”

How this would have gone down if the bouncer had recognized Badr:
Bouncer: “You can’t come in here dress-….oh….oh….yes of course you can take your shirt off, Mr. Hari. No, no, pants are not necessary if you don’t want to wear them.”
