February Rankings: HW Division

HW Division Rankings (70 kg and over)
#1 Semmy Schilt
#2 Remy Bonjasky
#3 Badr Hari
#4 Alistair Overeem
#5 Peter Aerts
#6 Errol Zimmerman
#7 Ewerton Teixeira
#8 Hesdy Gerges
#9 Daniel Ghita
#10 Pavel Zhuravlev
#11 Nathan Corbett
#12 Tyrone Spong
#13 Kyotaro
#14 Zabit Samedov
#15 Melvin Manhoef
#16 Gokhan Saki
#17 Ruslan Karaev
#18 Singh Jaideep
#19 Anderson Silva
#20  Ashwin Balrak

As quiet as things are in the MAX division, they're even quieter at the top of the HW rankings.  For now, there's nothing at all scheduled for Schilt, Bonjasky, Aerts, Zimmerman, Teixeira, or Zhuravlev#4 Alistair Overeem also doesn't have anything officially set, though he is rumored to possibly be facing Raul Catinas at an upcoming K-1 ColliZion show.

The busiest man in the top 10 is clearly #9 Daniel Ghita.  Ghita has upcoming fights set with Dzevad Poturak and Attila Karacs (both just on the cusp of the top 20) and #8 Hesdy Gerges at the May Amsterdam ArenA show.  The Gerges/Ghita fight is a great bit of matchmaking and the best HW fight since the GP.  Before facing Ghita, Gerges will also fight #20 Ashwin Balrak on Feb. 27.

One fight fans are eagerly waiting for information on is #3 Badr Hari's May opponent.  The fight has already been turned down by the great Ernesto Hoost and #2 Remy Bonjasky - it's a tough call who will face Badr on the big show.  While he waits, Badr will face Mourad Bouzidi in less than two weeks for It's Showtime.

Also highly anticipated: #12 Tyrone Spong v. #15 Melvin Manhoef in May.  Should be an outstanding fight.

Finally, the always busy #19 Anderson "Braddock" Silva keeps up his full schedule - he has fights set for It's Showtime cards in February, March, and then a solid fight against Mourad Bouzidi in May.

Schilt

still is the best.

Glad to see Ghita has a full schedule coming up. I like watching that guy fight.

Where do these rankings come from?

Not sure how Bonjasky is above Hari, when Hari was in the Finals…

I think it’s correct Bonjasky and Hari fought 2 time and Bonjasky won (2007 and 2008 final) and in this final 8 both of them lost to Schilt so badr hasn’t any advantage to remy now.
Pretty good ranking but two things annoy me :
1. Jerome LeBanner was in final 8 this year and he just lost to the champ (Schilt) why he is not in top 20?!
2. Ruslan Karaev is #17 now so why a fighter like Teixeira is #7 and Zimmerman , Ghita , Zhuravlev , Corbett , Kyotaro ( ruslan won Kyotaro in final 16 in seoul ) and even Samedov is above him in this ranking?! just for lost to Badr Hari?!

Good questions – I’ll try to give some thoughts:

People are often trying to rank Hari ahead of Bonjasky, but I just can’t see it. It’s true Hari made the finals, but both men lost to Schilt – it just so happened that Bonjasky lost to Schilt earlier in the evening than Hari did due to the draw. Had the semis been Schilt v. Hari and Overeem v. Bonjasky it likely would have been reversed. Plus, as k1wgp mentioned, Bonjasky beat Hari twice, and before losing to Schilt Remy was on a 2 year winning streak. Until Remy starts losing to guys who aren’t ranked #1 in the world, or until Badr beats him, I stick to my guns that Remy ranks higher.

I’m a fan of Le Banner but the guy looked awful against Schilt, is 2-5 in his last fight, and hasn’t beaten a remotely credible opponent since 2006.

As for Karaev, his ranking is more due to a combination of the Gerges loss and inactivity than the Hari loss. He just has not fought much lately and only had one win in 2009. It’s possible I’m being a bit harsh on him, but I look at him and see a guy who is, unfortunately, on the downward swing and not accomplishing much. I’d love him to get some solid wins and prove me wrong though.

I'm looking at the Opponents and Outcomes...

Remy Bonjasky:
15. Melvin Manhoef 3 RD DEC
6. Errol Zimmerman 3 RD DEC

Badr Hari:
14. Zabit Samedov 1 RD KO
17. Ruslan Karaev 1 RD KO
4. Alistair Overeem 1 RD TKO

I understand that Hari lost to Remy over a year ago, but it was due to a DQ, and before that it was a 3 RD DEC two years ago. I can see your point, but Hari was more impressive in the GP IMO.
