Video of the Day: Toby Imada vs. Andy Souwer - S-Cup 2010

Here is the video footage from the long-awaited semi-final bout between Andy Souwer and Toby Imada at Shootboxing's S-Cup from earlier in the week. This fight is how you'd define a messy brawl by all means, and you can see how Imada was able to score points by using a constant array of sweeps and throws whenever Souwer would throw a strike and put himself off balance.

Absolutely dreadful gameplan by Souwer. By constantly wailing in and giving Imada something to latch on to, Souwer basically gave away this fight. Had he stayed on the outside and avoided the clinch and the close exchanges he could of hacked away on Imada’s legs and body, in which he would of probably won, and better yet, got a finish.

True

He would’ve been better served keeping his distance, and using teeps + kicks to keep Toby at bay, but give credit where it’s due- Imada cut off the ring well and forced Andy into a brawl. Sure, he could’ve been a bit more stubborn and refused to get into clinch range, but aside from the kicks Souwer landed at the beginning, I thought the best offense he strung together were his punching combos in the pocket.

He obviously outstruck Toby, but it was the throws that made all the difference.

Toby did a great job; he took advantage of the opportunities he was was given. That said, Andy was way too aggressive. I actually saw him as the one who initiated more of the clinching.

well you will never see Andy using the teeps

But you are right he should utilize more kicks and especially the jab to keep Imada away from clinching. But all credit goes to Imada who neutralized most part of Souwer’s strength (because of the injury ?) And used the rules of Shootboxing to his advantage by using throws.

Edson Barboza and Charles Oliveira are gonna stir up the pot at 155!

Toby Imada is tough as hell.

He’s been around a long time and seems to be getting better with age.

Nice throws.

The one after Souwer’s jumping knee was tip top.
