Gilbert Melendez vs. Shinya Aoki II Falls Through for K-1 Dynamite!! 2010
All good things they say, never last. So today Ariel Helwani dashes the dreams of many a MMA fan and kills the dream that Shinya Aoki would get his rematch with Gilbert Melendez sooner rather than later and on Japanese soil. We saw them fight in a cage under the Strikeforce ruleset, but how would the same bout fare under DREAM rules in Japan with Aoki having a new focus? We might just have to keep waiting for this to happen.
One of the major stumbling blocks is that Melendez's contract with Strikeforce is coming to an end, and while he does have a championship clause, which allows the organization to continue booking fights for him as long as he champion, it proved difficult to get him to fight in an another promotion without a finalized long-term deal.
According to Kogan, FEG will look to keep Aoki on the card against another opponent.
Asked whether there was a chance the fight could be saved in the coming weeks, Kogan admitted that anything could happen but that it is currently off the table.
"It's not a problem with anyone," Kogan said. "It's just a deal couldn't happen. Everyone is very upset."
So now the question is; who will Shinya Aoki meet at Dynamite!! if he is still to fight?

I'd sign on the dotted line for that.

Probably the best option
and despite a recent loss to JZ, not that hard of a sell. I mean, they had Aoki near the top of a card in a fight against Aurelio.

this is a good thing, I don’t want to see kill fight anymore rematches right now… he just fought aoki and thompson, let’s get some fresh blood on the mat (Alvarez is what should be happening)!

man
this really shows the limits of the DREAM/Strikeforce alliance. Strikeforce is a fine promotion for….some fighter I can’t think of right now but for Melendez or their other champs it’s a bit of a career cul de sac.
