Is Alistair Overeem the Man to Stop Semmy Schilt?
For the past two years Alistair Overeem has been rampaging through K-1, scoring a highlight reel of KO's to rival that of many a K-1 great. Last night he added another dominating win to his resume, but this one was somehow different. In his one round destruction of Ben Edwards, Overeem looked like a different fighter. He showed improved boxing, and a more well-rounded game. He looked, in short, like a true kickboxer.
While his previous outings have been impressive, Overeem has often relied on a combination of size, aggression, and raw strength to bully his opponents into defeat. The performance last night was more nuanced and precise. Take a look at that first knockdown, which comes from him reading Edwards's punches and counter-striking successfully. Overeem avoids the combo, then when Edwards fires again, Overeem knows where the opening will be, and sneaks in a tight, hard shot to drop him. The second knockdown again comes from simple, good boxing. Watch as Edwards throws strikes just before this knockdown - Edwards throws, then takes a moment to bring his guard back up, leaving his chin exposed after each punch. Once again, Overeem reads this, allows Edwards to throw a punch, then quickly hits a devastating counter right to put him down. Edwards shows incredible heart to get up, but from there it's essentially over, and Overeem only needs to land another solid shot to put him away.
Compare this to the first Hari fight, or the Teixeira slaughter last year, and you can see a more advanced display of technique from Overeem. And that makes him a huge threat to the nearly unstoppable champion Semmy Schilt. To beat Schilt, a fighter needs to combine the technical skills to land on Schilt, with the power and aggression to make those shots count. Last night, Overeem may have shown the exact combination of skills needed.
Tomorrow we'll find out how the brackets work out, but right now, it will take a big upset from one of the other fighters to stop an Overeem v. Schilt showdown in the Grand Prix. And that showdown could finally prove what most kickboxing fans have felt for some time: that Alistair Overeem is much more than just an MMA fighter trying his hand at K-1 - he's one of the elite kickboxers in the world.

He will
If Overeem fights Schilt, he will win. Schilt is pretty much all size. Overeem is massive and with improved technique he is a force to be reckoned with. He can win this thing. No Remy? No Hari? Seems to me like this will be his year.
Well..
Well alright, maybe Semmy isn’t all size lol. He does have a high work rate, but Ubereem has all the tools necessary to drop him.

I have questions about the whole Golden Glory dynamic between the two. Will they go for broke and fight each other at their hardest? Will Overeem even fight Semmy? I could honestly see Overeem just throwing in the towel if he is matched up with Semmy, because that way, Overeem didn’t have to potentially get beaten up and he could come back to Strikeforce earlier.
Normally I’d agree with you, with the kind of “loyalty” a lot of American gyms and teams show, refusing to fight teammates and such. But, if you watch his most recent “The Reem Documentary” video he expresses that Semmy trains with a separate group, and not with the other Golden Glory fighters.
Semmy also took on Zimmerman, the Golden Golory guys have no trouble fighting eachother.

This is correct. There are different GG locations, and Overeem and Schilt, while both under the GG banner, don’t regularly train together. Overeem has said he has no problem taking Schilt out.

That's being a true martial artist.
They took away his best weapon and all it did was motivate him to improve all the other areas of his striking. Overeem’s really winning me over.
I’d like to see him develop a good jab and use mead movement more, those are his only glaring weaknesses standing up. At his size, he could really dictate the range if he had a good jab, and each of the first two knockdowns came off of good head movement. If he’d use that more instead of covering up for defense, I think he’ll really intimidate people into being tentative.
Im intimidated by watching him on tv

The same could be said for Schilt
How soon people forget about the origins of FEG’s varied capricious rule changes.
Overeem is the smartest fighter in K-1
Besides the technical domination, what is awesome here is how Alistair mentally ruled the fight, He came with a strong strategy. He stayed focused the whole fight and was able to observe and control Edwards.
We can clearly see from 3:01 how Edward just gave up and let the beast finish him. Edward still showed a lot of heart here, standing after 3kd, he deserves to fight in K-1,
Really impressive fight
awesome fight!
and great observation about his counter-striking… i still don’t understand when/how they decide to cover up at the right time and when to throw, or if reem could see when he was blocking… anybody have answers?

Sometimes you can see, other times you can just feel the rhythm of the strikes. Edwards kept throwing the same combos and was dropping his hands after every one. Reem simply waited for the flurry to end, then threw a overhand right(knowing Ben’s hands were at his waist) were he thought Ben’s head should be.

"What pissed me off is that I’m Little Floyd’s father, They’re showing on TV him talking about this loyalty to Roger. F—- Roger! I’m his daddy. His loyalty should always be with me. I’m the reason he’s here today. I gave him life. Now he’s got Leonard Ellerbe and Roger sucking up to him. They’re just around to rip him off. He’s going to find out just like he did before."

Schilt all day
Overeem, for all his talent, is a serious front-runner. Unless he comes in there and lamps Schilt in a hurry he’ll get frustrated, tired and beaten. I don’t forsee him putting Schilt away early—though Hari certainly made it look possible his first time around, so the intrigue is at least present.
