Sefo/Overeem Altercation at Dynamite
Everyone's favorite source of news, Alistair Overeem, is back at it. This time, details are coming up about a backstage confrontation with Ray Sefo the morning of Dynamite. This story comes from one of Sefo's training partners who was with him in Japan for the event, and was posted at NZMMA.tv.
We had just got done eating with the same group of people as Tuesday then Ray goes off and talks with this guy Mike who was with Alistair Overeem. They were talking about training and stuff and Alistair goes "So Ray you were celebrating when I lost to Badr?"
Ray said "Well yeah I was."
Alistair: "Well you know what that means then? You're next on my list."
(Ray grabbed a seat and sat down right in front of Overeem, Overeem was trying to be all staunch)
Ray: "Good cause you're on mine too. I've already asked if I can fight you."
Overeem stands up, Ray stood up, and I was thinking "Oh fuck am I going to have to blindside Overeem?"
And Ray said "Alistair, I've got nothing against you, we got told to celebrate if Badr was to beat you, and we did. I don't know you to have a problem with you, but do I want to fight you? Yeah of course I do!"
Alistair: "Good cause come fight time I'm coming to hurt you."
Ray: "Good. Cause when that bell rings, I'm coming to hurt you too!"
There was a moment where it was like a Wanderlei/Rampage stare down from Pride days but Overeem's crew grabbed him and they walked away!
Since Overeem's entry into K-1, Sefo has been one of the men most vocally taking the "pro-K1" side to counter Alistair's "pro-MMA" side, so it is not surprising that the two would end up with some heated emotion.
At this point, I see no reason for K-1 not to set up Sefo v. Overeem as each man's next fight. Sefo is effectively done at the top level of K-1, so why not get one more big fight out of him here? Overeem has mentioned a possible K-1 fight this spring, which would be a perfect time to do it. The only potential wrinkle is Sefo's hope to get back into the GP in 2010. A loss here would make it harder to justify giving him a Final 16 wild card slot, though that certainly doesn't mean K-1 wouldn't do it anyway.
Finally, it's not a shock that Sefo and the announcers were told to celebrate if Hari won, but it's still interesting to see it made public so bluntly. K-1 has always had a bit of an unfortunate pro-wrestling side to the way they build and promote fights, and this kind of interference from the higher offices, while not super harmful, does strike me as being somewhat dishonest.

I highly doubt that K-1 will give Sefo a wildcard spot after all the lackluster performances (especially the one at the 2008 Final 16) and after over a year of K-1 inactivity anyhows. They’re supposedly going to try to hold more qualifying tournaments for the two year tournament scheme, so Sefo will probably be in one of those. This matchup will be a good test of whether Sefo’s serious though. I’ve always thought his decline was a pity since he still has the speed, strength and chin for the sport.
I dunno, they gave Musashi a shot
… and he was DONE.

Yeah, Musashi is the prime example. If Sefo makes a passionate “Give me one more shot!” pitch, they’ll do it.
That two year thing is still firmly in the rumor camp, and I’ve never heard it brought up since it was first mentioned. After a strong fall and big GP and Dynamite ratings, I’d be pretty surprised to see now GP this year.

Tanikawa himself has spoken about the two year idea (I think he mentioned it in a press conference or something too) and with TV itself declining in Japan, a two year plan would be much better than the threat of immediate cancellation that’s always hanging above K-1.
And really, unlike Musashi (way past his prime, but still sticking out his neck despite injuries for K-1) Sefo’s problem has mostly been work ethic. Tanikawa has been pretty critical about him, he’s also said something about Sefo having to restart from the qualifiers too in 2010.
