DREAM.12 Results

The Demolition Man headlined DREAM's first all-cage event.

As always, our friends at BE were awake for DREAM's first foray into caged combat, with a few surprises and a few fights that went exactly as we expected.

Quick Results
Alistair Overeem def. James Thompson via submission (guillotine choke) R1
Eddie Alvarez def. Katsunori Kikuno via submission (arm-triangle choke) R2
Marius Zaromskis def. Myeon Ho Bae via KO (head kick) R1
Kazushi Sakuraba def. Zelg Galesic via submission (kneebar) R1
Katsuyori Shibata def. Tokimitsu Ishizawa via TKO (punches) R1
Dong-Sik Yoon def. Tarec Saffiedine via split decision
Yoshiro Maeda def. Chase Beebe via submission (rear-naked choke) R1
Kuniyoshi Hironaka def. Won Sik "Parky" Park via TKO (eye injury) end of R1
Tomoya Miyashita def. Keisuke Fujiwara via unanimous decision

As you can see, the main event went exactly as planned, Alistair Overeem, the Demolition Man steamrolled James Thompson, using the same finisher was he did at Ultimate Glory 11, a standing guillotine choke in just about a minute and a half. The big question with Overeem is where does he go from here? In a non-UFC world, the only real fights for Alistair are against Fabricio Werdum, Josh Barnett, Brett Rogers and Fedor Emelianenko. Everybody else is going to end up like this.

Eddie Alvarez reminded us all to never overhype a Japanese fighter again and to never doubt how awesome he is, Zaromskis had a Cro Cop-level high kick KO. Shibata actually won a fight that he was a favorite in, but it wasn't pretty, he really belongs back in pro wrestling. I think the biggest story was Kazushi Sakuraba over Zelg Galesic. Nobody expected Sakuraba to win this fight, he was just going to get his face pounded in and we were supposed to talk about how he needs to stop fighting and how FEG needs to protect him. Apparently people need to be protected from his submissions still, old man or not.

Very glad that Saku pulled it off. Nasty kneebar.

Maeda was on fire.

Kikuno impressed, I knew he was great but he was handling a top 5 LW for one round.

Kikuno has a bright future

Last night just wasn’t his night.

Saku winning throws a wrench into a lot of things, because Saku is sort of like the Randy Couture of Japan right now. Is he washed up? Oh wait, he strings together a bunch of dominant wins. Arggg.

I have to say, that Sakuraba victory was an amazing thing. I can not believe he pulled it off, and while I don’t want to see the guy stay in the game just to keep getting pounded, I can’t remember the last time I was so elated by a win, and will miss him when he retires. Great stuff.
